A Brooklyn denizen for years, illustrator Joel Holland knows how special the place is. Imbuing his drawings with the same heart and panache that he brought to the Manhattan book, he takes readers on a trip into its far-flung neighborhoods, from Greenpoint to Coney Island; Bay Ridge to Brownsville.
These pages highlight a telephone book's worth of small businesses that contribute to Brooklyn's multicultural, demographic-spanning appeal: Mom and Pop restaurants and African music sellers; clothing from Carhartt to vintage; vinyl and knitting stores that double as community centers; auto-repair shops and art galleries; and, of course, an endless supply of delis and pizza joints.
Each illustration includes engaging anecdotes and bits of neighborhood lore researched and written by journalist David Dodge, helping bring additional flavor and context to Holland's drawings. In this classic work, Henry Crawford describes in detail the ornamentation of stone monuments of this period, reproducing in the book some 300 illustrations of this form of decoration, which had its origin in the Celtic, pre-Christian period. Drawn from the memories, stories, and private archives of Frida's great nieces, the book reveals what Casa Kahlo meant to the now world-famous artist and cultural heroine. The Kahlo family home was the artist's safe haven away from her volatile marriage, where the people who anchored her--her parents, favorite sister, and beloved niece--lived. It's where she brought friends and lovers away from the public life she lived in Casa Azul, where she taught legions of students in the home's lush courtyard, and where the artist herself lived for several years in the late 1940s. Rich with family anecdotes, early artwork, unpublished letters, documents, and vivid details of daily life in Coyoacán, this is not another retelling of the Frida myth, but a rare insider account from Frida's own family.

Readers encounter Frida not only as an artist and icon, but as a daughter, mentor, teacher, political thinker, and fiercely loyal family member whose creative life was inseparable from the homes and people around her. Within this framework, the book sheds light on both the opportunities and challenges that Sufis encountered in developing a transregional network of material culture. Using the concept of intimacy to highlight the shrines' affective interconnections between people, objects, and ideas, author Peyvand Firouzeh invites readers to step inside these significant but understudied sacred spaces and rethink their wider religious and material significance. Looking closely at sites ranging across thousands of kilometers, this book combines a detailed analysis of architecture, objects of ritual, and manuscripts, with local and dynastic histories, Sufi poems, patronage documents, and a unique focus on the disciple-artists who created these spaces. This book will contribute to the understanding of Gothic architecture in early thirteenth century England - most specifically, how forms and spaces were conceived in relation to the cultural, religious and political life of the period. The architecture and topography of Lincoln Cathedral are examined in their cultural contexts, in relation to scholastic philosophy, science and cosmology, and medieval ideas about light and geometry, as highlighted in the writings of Robert Grosseteste - Bishop of Lincoln Cathedral (1235-53). At the same time the architecture of the cathedral is considered in relation to the roles of the clergy and masons; the policies of the bishop; matters of governance, worship and education; ecclesiastical hierarchy, church liturgy, politics and processionals. The book explores Grosseteste's ideas in the broader context of medieval and Renaissance cosmologies, optics/perspective, natural philosophy and experimental science, and considers historical precedents in regard to religious, political and symbolic influences on church building. The contributors to this volume make an important contribution to our current understanding of the relation between architecture, theology, politics and society during the Middle Ages, and how religious spaces were conceived and experienced.

Author Biography

Nicholas Temple is Professor of Architecture, School of Art, Design and Architecture, University of Huddersfield, UK. The English Gothic style developed somewhat later than in France, but rapidly established its own architectural and ornamental codes. The author, John Shannon Hendrix, classifies English Gothic architecture in four principal stages: the Early English Gothic, the Decorated, the Curvilinear, and the Perpendicular Gothic. Several photographs of these architectural testimonies allow us to understand the whole originality of Britain during the Gothic era, in Canterbury, Wells, Lincoln, York, and Salisbury. English Gothic architecture is a poetic one, speaking both to the senses and to the spirit.

Number of Pages: 256

Dimensions: 0.81 x 10.63 x 8.5 IN

Publication Date: June 30, 2019

Report copyright infringement

by Dan Azoulay (Author), Raya Azoulay (Photographer), Christopher Hume (Foreword by)

This book takes readers on a journey of the best surviving Art Deco architecture in Toronto and beyond, from the stunning 7th floor of Eaton's former College Street Store to the breath-taking civic marvel of R.C. She worked at the local swimming pool and partied in the city park, both built during the Depression era. In high school she was a cheerleader on 1930s football fields for onlookers in Work Progress Administration bleachers and camped out at a nearby Civilian Conservation Corps created park and lake. She never knew any of these structures were fashioned by the New Deal, nor did she notice the New Deal treasures in Salt Lake City while at the University of Utah where she received her Bachelor's Degree or the New Deal structures in Carbondale, Illinois where she earned her Master's Degree at Southern Illinois University. Returning to New Mexico, she had a career in the state health and mental health administration that included directorship of Carrie Tingley Hospital, a New Deal facility with many public art treasures. This book highlights North American cases that deal with issues such as climate projections, public health, adaptive capacity of vulnerable populations, and design interventions for floodplains, making the content applicable to many locations around the world. The contributors in this book discuss topics ranging from how built environment professionals respond to a changing climate, to how the building stock may need to adapt to climate change, to how resilience is currently being addressed in the design, construction, and operations communities. The purpose of this book is to provide a better understanding of climate change impacts, vulnerability, and resilience across scales of the built environment. Focusing on structures over fifty years old, at least two stories, and over fifty feet in diameter, the authors eventually found twenty-one, and made it their mission to create a comprehensive inventory. Since most of the barns were constructed in the early 1900s, the couple explored archives to gather remarkable historic photographs and paperwork. When possible, they also took interior and exterior photographs and talked with owners to tell the story of each one--who built it and when, original and current uses, individual characteristics, construction details, and extra anecdotes they learned along the way. They also revisited several sites to document what changed over time.

In addition, the Bartuskas introduce the hows and whys, as well as the fascinating history and development of round barns across the United States. The structures continue to succumb to economic and technological changes, as well as to fire, disrepair, and the forces of nature. Since the authors started their project, seven of the barns no longer exist, and several of the remaining fourteen are in serious trouble. Hoping to inspire others to help maintain, preserve, and restore these unique cultural icons, they include examples of successful re-use and creative conservation nationwide, along with other significant ways to save additional types of barns, buildings, and rural communities in order to preserve a vanishing rural heritage.

Number of Pages: 204

Dimensions: 0.5 x 10.9 x 8.5 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: April 18, 2024

retired-rehabbed-reborn-the-adaptive-reuse-of-americas-derelict-religious-buildings-and-schools-paperback
Retired, Rehabbed, Reborn: The Adaptive Reuse of America's Derelict Religious Buildings and Schools - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Simons (Author), Gary Dewine (Author), Larry Ledebur (Author)

Each year in the United States, hundreds of religious buildings and schools become vacant or underutilized as congregations and populations merge, move, or diminish. These structures are often well located, attractive, eligible for tax credits, and available for redevelopment. In this practical and innovative handbook, authors Simons, DeWine, and Ledebur have compiled a step-by-step guide to finding sustainable new uses for vacant structures. The reuse of these important buildings offers those charged with revitalizing them an opportunity to capture their embodied energy, preserve local beloved landmarks, and boost sustainability. Rehabbing presents an opportunity for developers to recoup some value from these assets. Neighbors and other stakeholders also enjoy benefits as the historic structures are retained and the urban fabric of communities is preserved.

Retired, Rehabbed, Reborn features ten in-depth case studies of adaptive reuse outcomes for religious buildings and public schools that have achieved varying degrees of success. In addition to covering the demographics of demand and supply for historic buildings, the authors demonstrate how to identify a worthy project and how to determine a building's highest and best use, its market potential, and its financial feasibility, including costs and public subsidies. Readers will gain practical, firsthand experience with the powerful and popular Autodesk(R) Revit(R) software; purpose-built for Building Information Modeling (BIM), which industry leading architects and building design professionals are using to move beyond traditional Computer Aided Design (CAD) and drafting to manage complex projects, foster collaboration and boost productivity. With tools for early schematic design and planning, detailed design development studies and tools to create complete sets of deliverables including traditional construction document sets and modern digital output, Revit offers the modern architect everything they need to be successful in today's competitive market. Within these pages you will find a concise manual focused squarely on the rationale and practicality of creating architectural projects within the BIM paradigm. The emphasis is on proven best-practice procedures rather than a series of independent commands and tools. The goal of each lesson is to help readers complete building design projects successfully. You will find equal emphasis on "why" individual tools and features are used, not just "how" to perform the picks and clicks. The text and exercises seek to give the reader a clear sense of the value of the tools, while remaining focused on practical examples from architectural practice. Revit Essentials for Architecture provides resources designed to shorten your learning curve, raise your comfort level, and, most importantly, give you real-life, tested, and practical advice on the usage of the software to create architectural Building Information Models.

Features:

Thorough coverage of the essential skills required to use Revit for Architecture.

Includes coverage of modeling tools, setting up views, composing sheets, working with design options, linked files, and team collaboration with worksharing.

The author combines his extensive experience as an educator and architectural professional with a straightforward, engaging writing style, making even complex material easier for readers to master and apply to real projects.

Practical, project-focused exercises encourage readers to "learn by doing," giving a deeper understanding of the BIM process and the tools and techniques used to practice it.

BIM Manager tips throughout the text offer readers practical insights on what is required to manage building information modeling in a modern architectural setting.

Dataset and practice files are included and available for download from the author's website.

Files are provided for each chapter, so you can skip to just the topics you need or follow the lessons from start to finish. Koon Wee (Editor)

This book contains multiple short critiques, reflections and manifestos, affording each contributing architect and intellectual the time and space to imagine new social paradigms in China. Emerging from a tumultuous history of high culture and complex territorial conditions, there is nothing straightforward about the social development of China. The complexity of the social practices developed by architects and shapers of the built environment can be explained in part by the last three decades of an intensified adoption of the market economy by the Communist Party of China, after an equally short three decades of closed-door communist control. There is no political meltdown like the democratization of the former Communist Bloc, but there is a constant managing of discontent and resistance across China. At the apex of the many creative and intellectual forces in China, architects harbor and give form to many tactics of resistance. Unfortunately, architects are also the instruments and minds complicit with profit-mongering developers and governments, pursuing unchecked urbanization, degradation of the environment, exploitation of the marginalized, and the creation of a very inequitable China.
This book begins with an introduction that defines the forms and tendencies of China's society as it stands today, and it positions the work of a small number of architects and intellectuals who are at the forefront of reforming, rethinking and even revolutionizing the Chinese society. Beneath the veneer of a very successful China that the world readily acknowledges, a quiet revolution is taking place within the realms of architecture and the city. The social, architectural and urban theories documented in this book are organized around the established canons of social actions - from mobilizing, laboring, resisting and mediating, to networking, controlling, rationalizing and aestheticizing. This book aims to put the social agenda squarely back in the rapid development of the built environment in China.
This publication is the culmination of a three-year study of social issues in the architecture and cities of China. It involved visits to sites undergoing massive change, discussions and debates among architects and critics, reflections by practitioners about their own work, and activists lobbying for social change. Supported by the non-profit AA Asia, the edition of the contents relied heavily on original input and exchanges between architects and theorists committed to China, from Asia and beyond. Since the 1990s, AA Asia remains one of a few unique think tanks committed to the study of architecture and cities in Asia. These innovations offer unprecedented opportunities to enhance sustainability, human well-being, and energy efficiency in these domains. However, alongside these developments come pressing questions about authorship, ethical responsibility, and the broader impact of AI-driven tools on the art and practice of design and architecture. As AI regulation continues to evolve globally, architects, designers, and scholars must engage in critical discussions about how new technologies can be harnessed responsibly. This volume of Emerald Studies in Sustainable Architecture and Design examines the intersection of AI and architecture and provides a comprehensive exploration of AI-based tools and their role in shaping contemporary architectural practice. Divided into three parts, this edited collection investigates AI's influence on design processes, its integration into architectural education, and its transformative potential in interior design and the metaverse. Through real-world case studies and expert contributions, this volume highlights both the opportunities AI presents and the ethical dilemmas it raises. By framing AI's role within the broader context of sustainability and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this work makes a unique and timely contribution to the field. Bridging research and practice, this collection is an invaluable resource for academics, students, and professionals in architecture, design, urban studies, and sustainability. After 1960, however, the year in which Brasilia was inaugurated, economic growth in the region slowed and the modernist project faltered. The English-speaking world, which had previously admired Latin American buildings, began to write them out of the history of twentieth-century architecture. Building the New World attempts to redress the balance. It surveys the most important examples of state-funded modernism in Latin America during a period of almost unimaginable optimism, when politicians and architects such as Pani, Costa, Reidy and Niemeyer sought ways, literally, to build their societies out of underdevelopment.

Author Biography

Valerie Fraser is a Reader in the Department of Art History and Theory at the University of Essex.
