I have to tell you of a curious series of events which happened in such a house as I have tried to describe. It is Castringham Hall in Suffolk. I think a good deal has been done to the building since the period of my story, but the essential features I have sketched are still there -- Italian portico, square block of white house, older inside than out, park with fringe of woods, and mere. The one feature that marked out the house from a score of others is gone. As you looked at it from the park, you saw on the right a great old ash tree growing within half a dozen yards of the wall, and almost or quite touching the building with its branches. I suppose it had stood there ever since Castringham ceased to be a fortified place, and since the moat was filled in and the Elizabethan dwelling-house built. At any rate, it had well-nigh attained its full dimensions in the year 1690. In that year the district in which the Hall is situated was the scene of a number of witch-trials.

Number of Pages: 168

Dimensions: 0.5 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: January 01, 2004

Report copyright infringement

by M. R. James was an eminent scholar who spent his entire adult life in the academic surroundings of Eton and Cambridge. His classic supernatural tales draw on the terrors of the everyday, in which documents and objects unleash terrible forces, often in closed rooms and nighttime settings where imagination runs riot. Lonely country houses, remote inns, ancient churches or the manuscript collections of great libraries provide settings for unbearable menace from creatures seeking retribution and harm. Brad Leithauser, the noted poet and novelist, had excellence as his only criterion in assembling this collection of twenty-eight of the eeriest short stories in the English language. Included are the most intriguing works by the writers who have defined the genre over the years - Henry James, Oliver Onions, and M. R. James - as well as stories by other authors whose forays into the supernatural are less well known: V. S. Pritchett, Muriel Spark, John Cheever, A. S. Byatt, Elizabeth Taylor, and Philip Graham among others. This surprising gathering of writers makes this collection a must-have for confirmed ghost-story fans as well as for those who simply love good writing. Brad Leithauser's introduction redefines the genre, finding its origins in our fascination with the world beyond our senses. Whatever the stories' similarities, however, each creates its own unique atmosphere of uncanniness that is as hard to analyze as it is to resist. After all, it is "in their restless unease, their dissatisfaction with the provable", as Leithauser writes, that the ghost stories' bewitching power lies.

Number of Pages: 432

Dimensions: 1.4 x 9.1 x 6.3 IN

Publication Date: February 06, 2008

Report copyright infringement

by George Saunders (Author)

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - WINNER OF THE BOOKER PRIZE - A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK

The "devastatingly moving" (People) first novel from the author of Tenth of December a moving and original father-son story featuring none other than Abraham Lincoln, as well as an unforgettable cast of supporting characters, living and dead, historical and invented

One of The New York Times's 100 Best Books of the 21st Century - One of The Atlantic's Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years - One of Paste's Best Novels of the Decade

"[Lincoln in the Bardo] demonstrates that even the unspeakable--civil war, familial grief--can be named through a close, humanizing narrative voice."--Amanda Gorman for Time, "25 Books That Capture This American Moment"

February 1862. With the Civil War less than one year old, President Lincoln's beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies gravely ill. In a matter of days, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. Newspapers report that a grief-stricken Lincoln returns, alone, to the crypt several times to hold his boy's body. From that seed of historical truth, George Saunders spins an unforgettable story that breaks free of its realistic framework into a thrilling, supernatural realm, deploying a kaleidoscopic, theatrical panorama of voices--living and dead, historical and invented--to ask a timeless question: How do we live and love when we know that everything we love must end?

Named One of the Ten Best Books of the Year by The Washington Post, USA Today, and Maureen Corrigan, NPR - One of Time's Ten Best Novels of the Year - One of O: The Oprah Magazine's Best Books of the Year
Author Biography

George Saunders is the author of eight books, including the story collections Pastoralia and Tenth of December, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her father was a successful Manchester businessman and Mary was educated both in England and Switzerland. In 1861 she married Major R. Molesworth, a nephew of Viscount Molesworth, an Irish aristocrat. Their marriage was ultimately unsuccessful and they were legally separated in 1879. Her first fiction-the 1869 novel 'Lover and Husband'-was published under the pseudonym Ennis Graham. As was common among authors of the day she wrote in a number of genres but-curiously-she was most prolific as a writer of children's' fiction, particularly for girls who were too old for fairytales but to young for adult fiction. These tales were for those who would eventually become Victorian wives and mothers and so were rich with the sentiments of duty and morality. These may seem like dubious credentials to those interested in good supernatural fiction and especially to those who have not actually read any of Mrs Molesworth's stories of ghosts and hauntings. However, this would be to do the author a great injustice for the only shortcoming concerning her strange tales is that she did not write more of them. Her talent for the genre will be immediately apparent to the reader and, indeed, several of the tales included here are recognised as classics and were highly regarded by the supernatural writer and academic M. R. James. Among the fifteen stories in this special Leonaur collection-which we believe (at the time of publication) is the only comprehensive gathering of Mary Molesworth's tales of the other worldly available-are 'The Story of the Rippling Train, ' 'At the Dip of the Road, ' 'The Man with the Cough, ' 'Half way Between the Stiles' and many others. Also included in this collection is a story by Mary Molesworth's son Bevil, 'A Ghost of the Pampas.' Bevil died on his Patagonian ranch when in his mid twenties.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Number of Pages: 300

Dimensions: 0.81 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: June 19, 2011

the-collected-supernatural-and-weird-fiction-of-vernon-lee-volume-1-including-five-novelettes-and-eight-short-stories-of-the-strange-and-unusual-hardcover
The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Vernon Lee: Volume 1-Including Five Novelettes and Eight Short Stories of the Strange and Unusual - Hardcover

Report copyright infringement

by Vernon Lee (Author)

Vernon Lee was the pseudonym of Violet Paget, she was born to British parents in France in 1856. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, his origins ever influenced his work. His tales were invariably set in New England, were darkly romantic and were often concerned with the occult and witches and their works in particular. Indeed, one of Hawthorne's ancestors actually sat as a judge during the famous Salem Witch Trials, so the author's inspiration could barely have stronger foundations. Predictably Hawthorne's stories contain puritanical messages on the themes of sin, guilt and fundamental evil which go well with stories that contain uncanny and, sometimes, almost surreal elements. Although Hawthorne was decidedly popular with readers opinions about his work was sharply divided among his peers. Poe was a particularly harsh critic. He is especially remembered for his portrayal of Americans abroad and for the creativity and freedom he displayed within his diverse literary perspectives. His novels remain highly regarded and continually read. Among them are Washington Square, The Bostonians, The Ambassadors and others. In any list of James' notable achievements one title frequently appears first-just as in every list of the most highly regarded supernatural fiction a James work is also certain to appear. That story is, of course, the novella, 'The Turn of the Screw'-a tale of creeping supernatural threat, terror, polluted innocence and inevitable tragedy. It is a deserved classic of supernatural fiction and true to the nature of such things subordinates James's other work in the genre almost to obscurity. Predictably a prolific author who had both a talent for and an interest in the fiction of the bizarre and ghostly would be unlikely to venture into its shadowy realms but once. This special Leonaur collection of Henry James' supernatural fiction fills four substantial volumes for modern readers to relish. A veritable literary feast is in store for those who dare to venture within its pages.
Readers will be enthralled by the strange story of transcended time that is 'The Sense of the Past' together with supporting notes. H. Riddell (Author)

A stunning collection from a mistress of the chilling

Aficionados of supernatural fiction are aware that its golden age was during the later Victorian and Edwardian eras. There was a huge public appetite for spine chilling tales and many magazines published their ideal form-the short story. This created opportunities for many writers to produce supernatural fiction. Among the huge number of stories published, some were exceptionally good and these came from the pens of those who became recognised masters of the form. Popular authors were often incredibly prolific and an individual writer's canon of supernatural fiction could be substantial. Almost every commercially minded writer wrote some supernatural fiction and many of the finest exponents of the craft were women. While Mrs. J. H. Riddell had much in common with her peers, she was highly regarded by some of the genres severest critics including the 'grand-master' himself, M. R. James. Charlotte Cowan was born in Ireland in 1832, the daughter of the High Sheriff of Antrim. She moved to London in 1855 and shortly thereafter married the civil engineer Joseph Hadley Riddell. As was often the practice at the time she subsequently wrote under her formal married name. Besides her career as a writer she was also a publisher, being part owner of the highly regarded literary periodical 'The St. Jame's Magazine.' This comprehensive Leonaur collection of Charlotte Riddell's strange stories comprises three substantial volumes to captivate both enthusiasts and collectors. In volume one readers will discover two novels, the well known 'The Haunted River' and 'The Haunted House at Latchford.' Also included are three novelettes, 'Nut Bush Farm, ' 'A Terrible Vengeance' and 'Old Mrs. Jones' plus two short stories, 'Hertford O'Donnell's Warning' and 'Forewarned, Forearmed.'
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Number of Pages: 468

Dimensions: 1.19 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: December 17, 2012

the-collected-supernatural-and-weird-fiction-of-mary-elizabeth-braddon-volume-1-including-one-novel-the-white-phantom-and-three-short-stories-of-th-hardcover
The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Mary Elizabeth Braddon: Volume 1-Including One Novel 'The White Phantom' and Three Short Stories of Th - Hardcover

Report copyright infringement

by Mary Elizabeth Braddon (Author)

3 Novels, 5 Novelettes and 23 short stories in four volumes of ghost, mystery and horror tales

Lovers of the Victorian fiction of Wilkie Collins know that to discover his female counterpart they need look no further than the works of Mary Elizabeth Braddon. She was a prolific author of the kind of dark melodrama much loved by her contemporary audience and her most renowned work, 'Lady Audley's Secret, ' has been often dramatised, filmed and, indeed, has never been out of print from the time of its original publication. Never was the accolade, 'The Queen of Sensation' so well deserved as it was by her. It is not unusual that a writer who produced so much material-and much of that with a flavour of the Gothic-should also turn her talents to the genre of supernatural and strange fiction, since there was much precedent for it among her literary peers and much appetite for it among the reading public. So it is, perhaps, unsurprising that this Leonaur collection of Mary Elizabeth Braddon's forays into the other worldly and bizarre runs to four substantial, satisfying volumes. As George and the Watchers investigate, they discover that a demonic presence is behind the attacks. In the box are various documents of ghost killers and a diary that chronicles an epic journey from Pennsylvania to San Francisco, along the route of the newly opened Lincoln Highway. Strange drawings and nonsensical writings in the diary tell of something sinister. George soon travels to San Francisco to investigate, and the more he learns, the clearer it becomes that something horrible happened in 1915. A monstrous creature has reanimated, and it is searching for something. She is, of course, the literary creator of the iconic Frankenstein's monster and that alone has guaranteed it and her immortality rivalled only by Bram Stoker's Dracula in the pantheon of the bizarre. Beyond her most famous literary work, 'Frankenstein, ' she possessed an incredible creative talent, responsible for a dazzling collection of novels, short stories, essays, plays, biographies and travel books. Mary Shelley was an independent, free thinking woman, decades before her time, who strongly adhered the ideals of her father, the political philosopher William Godwin and her mother, the feminist and liberal Mary Wollstonecraft. She notoriously-for her time-became the mistress of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and she subsequently married him upon the suicide of his wife. Those familiar with 'Frankenstein' will not be surprised to find it within this special collection, but those for whom it will be a new experience will discover a superb work of fiction which towers above our perceptions of it from its familiarity through film and television. Fortunately, Mary Shelley did not confine her excursions into the other worldly, weird and Gothic to just this tale of the 'man-made' man. This two volume edition contains two novels and many shorter pieces in testament to Mary Shelley's talent for the literature of the macabre.
The second volume of this special collection of Mary Shelley's literary excursions into the bizarre and horrific includes the substantial novel, 'The Last Man.' This fine tale languished in obscurity until after the middle of the 20th century and is another good example of the writing and thoughts of an author far ahead of her time. It tells of a future post-apocalyptic world ravaged and massively depopulated by plague. If the theme seems a familiar one today, it should be remembered Shelley published 'The Last Man' in 1826. It is joined here by 'The Invisible Girl, ' 'The Evil Eye' and 'The False Rhyme.'
Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket. R James. Swain's connection is quite straightforward-he knew and was a friend of James. They came from similar backgrounds, were academics and shared common interests-particularly concerning the church and its history. There can be little doubt that Swain was an ardent admirer of James' writing and while it is true that his own literary efforts are not in the class of the grand-master of the genre, to criticise him for that would be to forget that very few writers of supernatural tales have consistently risen to James' standard. Nonetheless, Swain's 'Stoneground Stories' are wonderfully charming. The principal character of these tales is, of course, based on Swain himself; he is a cleric whose benefice-like Swain's own at Stanground-sat close by the railway city of Peterborough in the English East Midlands. Those who relish a good ghost story will find much to enjoy in Swain's tales and little to regret. Cram was a renowned American architect by profession. He too was no stranger to the world of academia, since among many other important commissions of an ecclesiastical and collegiate nature he worked on the design for the military academy at West Point. Both these books are rare in their original editions and Leonaur has brought them together in this good value form so that enthusiasts may enjoy them.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Number of Pages: 212

Dimensions: 0.63 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: October 04, 2011

the-collected-supernatural-and-weird-fiction-of-j-sheridan-le-fanu-volume-1-including-two-novels-the-haunted-baronet-and-the-evil-guest-one-n-hardcover
The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of J. Not only is his body of supernatural and gothic fiction extremely substantial, he wrote ghost and horror fiction if not exclusively then certainly as the subject matter of the overwhelming majority of his considerable literary output. His authorship of novels and stories of the other worldly began from the first part of the nineteenth century making him one of the earliest specialist exponents of the genre in the 'modern' period. He is widely regarded as a master of his craft, and it is certain that once he had set out to create a thrill or chill in the minds of his reader one was sure to follow! J. Sheridan Le Fanu was without doubt the premier writer of ghostly fiction during the Victorian age and his influence on the genre can be seen in the work of his peers and those who followed after. An Irishman, in 1861 Le Fanu became the editor of the 'Dublin University Magazine' and this gave his fiction ready access to the public. 'The House by the Churchyard' and 'Wylder's Hand' were originally published in the magazine.
