When Rachel Vinrace embarks for South America on her father's ship she is launched on a course of self-discovery in a modern version of the mythic voyage. Virginia Woolf knew all too well the forms that she was supposed to follow when writing of a young lady's entrance into the world, and she struggled to subvert the conventions, wittily and assiduously, rewriting and revising the novel many times. The finished work is not, on the face of it, a 'portrait of the artist'. However, through The Voyage Out readers discover Woolf as an emerging and original artist: not identified with the heroine, but present everywhere in the social satire, the lyricism, and the patterning of consciousness.

Number of Pages: 384

Dimensions: 1.01 x 7.99 x 5.3 IN

Publication Date: September 06, 2011

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Voyage Out

Interest Level: Upper Grades, 9-12

Reading Level: 8.6

Point Value: 25

Report copyright infringement

by Ben Greenman (Author)

"Ben Greenman seems incapable of writing anything dry or familiar or expected. Published in 1838, this rousing sea adventure follows New England boy, Pym, who stows away on a whaling ship with its captain's son, Augustus. The two boys repeatedly find themselves on the brink of death or discovery and witness many terrifying events, including mutiny, cannibalism, and frantic pursuits. Poe imbued this deliberately popular tale with such allegorical richness, biblical imagery, and psychological insights that the tale has come to influence writers as various as Melville, James, Verne and Nabokov.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Only twelve when his father died bankrupt, young Herman tried work as a bank clerk, as a cabin boy on a trip to Liverpool, and as an elementary schoolteacher, before shipping in January 1841 on the whaler Acushnet, bound for the Pacific. Deserting ship the following year in the Marquesas, he made his way to Tahiti and Honolulu, returning as an ordinary seaman on the frigate United States to Boston, where he was discharged in October 1844. Books based on these adventures won him immediate success. By 1850 he was married, had acquired a farm near Pittsfield, Massachussetts (where he was the impetuous friend and neighbor of Nathaniel Hawthorne), and was hard at work on his masterpiece Moby-Dick. Literary success soon faded; his complexity increasingly alienated readers. After a visit to the Holy Land in January 1857, he turned from writing prose fiction to poetry. In 1863, during the Civil War, he moved back to New York City, where from 1866 to1885 he was a deputy inspector in the Custom House, and where, on September 28, 1891, he died. A draft of a final prose work, Billy Budd, Sailor, was left unfinished and uncollated; packed tidily away by his widow, it was not rediscovered and published until 1924.

Andrew Delbanco was born in 1952. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).

After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938).

The Japanese react by dispatching hundreds of suicide bombers against the Allied fleet surrounding Okinawa. By mid-May, the Allied fleet is losing a major ship a day to murderous swarms of kamikazes streaming out of Formosa and southern Japan. The radar picket line is the first defense and early warning against these hellish formations, but the Japanese direct special attention to these lone destroyers stationed north and west of Okinawa.

One destroyer, the USS Malloy, faces an even more pressing issue when her Executive Officer Connie Miles begins to realize that the ship's much-admired Captain Pudge Tallmadge is losing his mind under the relentless pressure of the attacks. While sailing aboard a ferry, the ship is destroyed in a collision, sending him adrift. He is rescued by a man who goes by 'Wolf' Larsen, a cruel, nihilistic captain of an antiquated schooner who represents the Nietzschean ideal-beautiful, strong, and individualistic-without the humanity. The driving zeitgeist of Larsen's life is his vengeful rivalry with his brother, aptly called 'Death.' Humphrey's body, spirt, and ideology are challenged and remolded as he faces constant abuse and the insidious nature of his new captain. When a beautiful but delicate castaway woman is picked up by Larsen, the dynamic of the crew is irretrievably altered. Humphrey's relationship with the woman finally completes his spiritual journey. Written by acclaimed American author Jack London of The Call of the Wild fame, The Sea-Wolf is emblematic of the great ideological struggles of the early 20th century and offers insight into the debates of the time, as well as the debates of today.

Number of Pages: 254

Dimensions: 0.75 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: September 22, 2022

Accelerated Reader:

Quiz Name: Sea-Wolf (Unabridged)

Interest Level: Upper Grades, 9-12

Reading Level: 8.1

Point Value: 18

Report copyright infringement

by Sam Grant (Author)

Destination: Lagos, Nigeria.

Refrigerated liner Albany Contessa on voyage - a part cargo of gold ingots, hidden within machinery cases, aboard.

Mike is the newly appointed staff Captain.

A Coaster rescue endangers lives aboard. Leads into further attack with shooting, and need for Foreign Office intervention to avoid international conflict.

Number of Pages: 154

Dimensions: 0.44 x 8 x 5 IN

Publication Date: June 24, 2022

Report copyright infringement

by Willis George Emerson (Author)

Written in the style of a factual account, this extraordinary novel details the experiences of a Norwegian sailor named Olaf Jensen, who sails to the centre of the earth through an entrance located at the North Pole. On his deathbed, Olaf recounts the two years he spent with Earth's internal residents - 12 foot tall beings whose capital city is purportedly the original Garden of Eden, and whose continued existence is facilitated by a 'smokey' sun at the centre of the planet. Although a remarkable and entertaining tale for any reader, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in the 'Hollow-Earth' theory and early speculative fiction around the topic. The subsurface world of Agharta is a recurring motif in paradisiacal mythos from around the world - the Valhalla of Norse mythology, Shangri-la, Tibet's Shambhalla, the Belovodia of Siberian shamanism - and as such this novel constitutes both a thoroughly entertaining and informative read. Willis George Emerson was an American writer, newspaperman, lawyer, and politician. Published in 1908, The Smokey God was his sixth book amongst other such as: The Man who Discovered Himself (1919), The Treasure of Hidden Valley (1915), and Winning Winds (1885).
