Cod, it turns out, is the reason Europeans set sail across the Atlantic, and it is the only reason they could. What did the Vikings eat in icy Greenland and on the five expeditions to America recorded in the Icelandic sagas? Cod, frozen and dried in the frosty air, then broken into pieces and eaten like hardtack. What was the staple of the medieval diet? Cod again, sold salted by the Basques, an enigmatic people with a mysterious, unlimited supply of cod.

As we make our way through the centuries of cod history, we also find a delicious legacy of recipes, and the tragic story of environmental failure, of depleted fishing stocks where once their numbers were legendary. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel, Cup of Gold (1929).

After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books, The Pastures of Heaven (1932) and To a God Unknown (1933), and worked on short stories later collected in The Long Valley (1938). Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey's paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.

Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with The Forgotten Village (1941) and a serious student of marine biology with Sea of Cortez (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette The Moon is Down (1942).Cannery Row (1945), The Wayward Bus (1948), another experimental drama, Burning Bright(1950), and The Log from the Sea of Cortez (1951) preceded publication of the monumental East of Eden (1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family's history.

The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Scientists have come to recognize the capacity of the rainforest to treat or cure ailments and diseases that plague modern life, such as AIDS, cancers, venereal diseases, heart problems, diabetes, Alzheimer's, arthritis, infertility, leukemia, multiple sclerosis and more. This priceless resource of over one hundred and twenty single Plants, thought to be lost over the generations, will ever be at your finger tips. Leaves of Life, Volume1: Single Plants, cites the enormous importance of the natural world of plants at a time when plant resources are decreasing at a rapid rate. No other time in history have human beings placed such importance on the natural world of plants. Guyana, which lies at the point where the Caribbean meets South America on its North Atlantic seaboard, consists of 80% rainforest and is home to one of the richest regions of the world with expanses of untouched neotropical forests and different species of plants found nowhere else on earth. Leaves of Life, Volume1: Single Plants reveals the true secrets of its tropical vegetation which was traditionally confined to the "Bush Men", the individuals who make their living off the local plant lore. These secrets have eluded European explorers like Walter Raleigh, the first European to record the existence of curare, a paralytic, plant-derived poison used in fishing and hunting in Guyana. Curare causes death by asphyxiation through the loss of control of muscles essential in respiration and is used in modern medicine as a muscle relaxant for shock treatment of mental illness, and as an adjunct to anaesthesia in heart surgery.

Number of Pages: 236

Dimensions: 0.5 x 10 x 7 IN

Publication Date: May 23, 2012

handy-pocket-guide-to-asian-vegetables-clear-identification-photos-and-explanatory-text-for-the-50-most-common-asian-vegetables-found-in-the-tropics-paperback
Handy Pocket Guide to Asian Vegetables: Clear Identification Photos and Explanatory Text for the 50 Most Common Asian Vegetables Found in the Tropics - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Wendy Hutton (Author)

Learn the essentials of Asian vegetables with this useful and portable reference book.

This handy vegetable guide introduces over 50 tropical vegetables commonly found in Indonesia. From the most upscale restaurants in New York to humble farm stays in Europe, chefs and restaurant-goers alike are seeking pleasure in food found in the wild.

In Pursuit of Wild Edibles: A Forager's Tour tells the story of one man passionate about finding wild edibles and creating recipes to highlight their unique flavors. An American expatriate, poet, and gourmet living in France, Jeffrey Greene has scoured the fields, rivers, and beaches of Europe and his native New England in search of foods ranging from puffballs and periwinkles to stone pine nuts and gooseneck barnacles. For many, foraging is the latest trend in foodie culture, but for Greene this journey stretches back to his childhood, when his parents fled New York City to a shack-like house in rural Connecticut. Convinced they could live off the land, the family raised goats, planted gardens, gathered seafood at the nearby coast, and foraged for food from the woods.

Inspired by these childhood experiences, Greene and his wife, Mary, bought and restored an old priory in rural Burgundy. Surrounded by forests, they learned to identify mushrooms and greens, and devoted themselves to inventing recipes for them. Thus began a pursuit that took Greene to the Polish Carpathians, the Appennines overlooking the Ligurian coast, the shores of Normandy and Brittany, and to Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the Pilgrims eked out their first winter in near starvation.

Greene's captivating book offers experienced foragers and novices alike an extensive sampling of his own recipes and a chance to come along with him on his international adventures. From razor clams and wild sea urchins, to young nettles and dandelion greens, to wild strawberries and cherries, Greene showcases the beauty of what one can cook up in a truly wild recipe.

Author Biography

Jeffrey Greene is the author of French Spirits: A House, a Village, and a Love Affair with Burgundy and The Golden-Bristled Boar: Last Ferocious Beast of the Forest (Virginia). The plants chosen represent every habitat and every region in North America, from the northern forests to the southwest deserts, from the largest cities to the wildest mountains. Rather than cover hundreds of species in brief accounts that leave the reader unsure of how to proceed, Samuel Thayer encourages readers to thoroughly learn one plant at a time. Each of these traditional foods has a rich culinary and cultural history--a wholesome past that is still relevant for our health and happiness today. The text is fully accessible to the novice, but remains botanically accurate and has the in-depth information that seasoned foragers crave.

Sharing the wisdom of a lifetime of daily foraging, the author answers all of the reader's questions about each plant: How do I identify it? What might I confuse it with? Where can I find it? What part do I use, and when is it ready to be picked? How do I gather and prepare it? How can I be sure to harvest it responsibly? This discussion is accompanied by more than 350 color photos showing all the key features for identification, including potentially confusing species. Photos also depict the exact parts to use and the proper stage for collection. All of this is delivered in a familiar but authoritative tone, along with humorous anecdotes and insights from extensive real-life experience with each plant covered in the book.

Incredible Wild Edibles contains an index, bibliography, illustrated glossary, range maps, and foraging calendar. To build it back and to make the Georgia oyster competitive on the national stage, a bit of scientific cosmetic work must be done, performed through aquaculture. The business of oyster farming combines physical labor and science, creating an atmosphere where disparate groups must work together to ensure its future. They lived along the shores of the Puget Sound, inhabiting the bays and estuaries in the days before the white man came, enjoying the bounty of the Pacific Northwest. Through time, the women developed ingenious methods of cookery to nourish and delight those who dined at their fires. They learned when the food was ripe for harvesting. They discovered which kinds of wood best suited their fires. They designed and made their own cooking equipment from the materials available to them. It is the aim of this book to give the reader an understanding of Indian cookery- with practical recipes where appropriate- and to explain the close relationship between First Nation's food and the northwest Coast Salish culture. Carol Batdorf has a long, close and caring association with the Coast Salish people. Apart from studying their culture, learning to carve totem poles and weave baskets, Carol has "become Indian". Travel outside the Mediterranean and the crab has a very different reputation. This small crustacean has spread to nearly every continent on the globe and been hailed as one of the most destructive invasive species of all time. Green crabs eat native shellfish species, outcompete local crabs, and destroy vital seagrass habitat when foraging for food. In turn, they threaten some of the world's most valuable fisheries and vulnerable ecosystems. After discovering the crab had decimated New England soft-shell clam populations, conservationists began focusing on removal to mitigate their invasive impact. Do you have recipes for tasty food from this stored food? These are recipes for stored- type foods and aren't in any regular cookbooks that I know of. This may be what you're looking for or may some day need. There is a Camping/Trail Section in this cookbook, but MANY of the recipes throughout the rest of the booklet would also work great for campfire cooking. During about 25 years of jungle living in Bolivia, South America, my mother collected these recipes. Some recipes are hers, some shared from other jungle wives and mothers. Where we lived, there were no grocery stores, no roads, no TVs, no electricity, no plumbing, no other people for about 11/2 hours flying time over a beautiful emerald carpet of Amazonian rainforest with an occasional brown river ribbon winding across the endless green below. Every 3 to 5 months, a Cessna would bring supplies, like batteries, 100 lb. bag of flour, raisins, canned foods, shotgun shells, outboard motor parts & gasoline, and most importantly - mail. My first summer in the jungle, Mom baked bread in a tin oven over a campfire. The next year she had a wood burning stove my father made for her from the round cut-off ends of a barrel & tins cans, clayed around to make a fire box, and a chimney stack of 5 gallon gas cans wired together. She still used the tin oven on the stove top for baking. It's not easy baking over a wood fire, trying to keep it burning evenly and consistently. My wish for you is that this recipe collection from Elena Josephine Garland Johnson will be a help to you. She would like that. It was delicious. I was immediately fascinated."

As this engaging culinary and natural history reveals, the humble eel is indeed an amazing creature. Every European and American eel begins its life in the Sargasso Sea -- a vast, weedy stretch of deep Atlantic waters between Bermuda and the Azores. Larval eels drift for up to three years until they reach the rivers of North America or Europe, where they mature and live as long as two decades before returning to the Sargasso to mate and die. Eels have never been bred successfully in captivity.

Consulting fisherfolk, cooks, and scientists, Schweid takes the reader on a global tour to reveal the economic and gastronomic importance of eel in places such as eastern North Carolina, Spain, Northern Ireland, England, and Japan. (While this rich yet mild-tasting fish has virtually disappeared from U.S. tables, over $2 billion worth of eel is still eagerly consumed in Europe and Asia each year.) The book also includes recipes, both historic and contemporary, for preparing eel.

Number of Pages: 200

Dimensions: 0.45 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: March 01, 2014

Report copyright infringement

by E. We think seriously about food because it is freighted with the hopes, fears, and anxieties of modern life. Yet critiques of food and food systems all too often sprawl into jeremiads against modernity itself, while supporters of the status quo refuse to acknowledge the problems with today's methods of food production and distribution. Food Fights sheds new light on these crucial debates, using a historical lens. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on "a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise" (Elizabeth Gilbert).

Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings--asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass--offer us gifts and lessons, even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth, and learn to give our own gifts in return.

Author Biography

Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.
