by Lydia Maria Child (Author)

Philothea is a novel written by Lydia Maria Child, first published in 1836. The story is set in the early 19th century and follows the life of a young woman named Philothea, who is raised in a strict Calvinist household. Despite her religious upbringing, Philothea is a free spirit and yearns for a deeper understanding of spirituality beyond the narrow confines of her faith. As Philothea grows older, she becomes increasingly disillusioned with the dogmatic teachings of her church and begins to explore other religious traditions, including Eastern mysticism and the teachings of the ancient Greek philosophers. Along the way, she meets a diverse cast of characters, including a wise old hermit, a wealthy merchant, and a group of traveling actors.Through her encounters with these individuals, Philothea learns valuable lessons about love, compassion, and the true nature of spirituality. Ultimately, she discovers that the path to enlightenment lies not in adherence to a particular doctrine or creed, but in the cultivation of one's own inner wisdom and compassion.Philothea is a thought-provoking and inspiring novel that explores timeless themes of faith, spirituality, and personal growth. It is a must-read for anyone interested in exploring the deeper mysteries of life and the human experience. The travellers descended from their chariots to rest under the shadow of the lofty plane trees, and refresh themselves with a draught from the fountain. The public road was thronged with people on their way to Olympia. Most of them drove with renewed eagerness to enter Corinth before the evening twilight; for nearly all travellers made it a point to visit the remarkable scenes in this splendid and voluptuous city, the Paris of the ancient world. A few were attracted by the cool murmuring of the waters, and turned aside to the fountain of Poseidon. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
