Saint Augustin - Hardcover

by Louis Bertrand (Author)

Saint Augustin by Louis Bertrand is a biography of the renowned Christian theologian and philosopher, Saint Augustine of Hippo. The book provides a comprehensive overview of Augustine's life, including his early years in North Africa, his conversion to Christianity, and his influential writings. Bertrand explores Augustine's intellectual journey, from his early skepticism and Manichaean beliefs to his eventual embrace of Christian doctrine and his development of the concept of original sin. The book also delves into Augustine's political and social views, including his ideas about the role of the state and the relationship between church and state. Bertrand's writing is engaging and accessible, making this biography an excellent choice for both scholars and general readers interested in the life and thought of one of Christianity's most important figures. To hunt, to ride horseback, now and then to go on parade, to look after his small-holders and agricultural slaves, to drive one of those bargains in which African cunning triumphs--such were the employments of Patricius. In short, he drifted through life on his little demesne. Sometimes this indolent man was overcome by a sudden passion for work; or again he was seized by furious rages. He was violent and brutal. At such moments he struck out right and left. He would even have hit his wife or flogged the skin off her back if the quietude of this woman, her dignity and Christian mildness, had not overawed him. Let us not judge this kind of conduct by our own; we shall never understand it.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
