The Broken Fife - Hardcover

by Gary C. Demack (Author)

A Sweeping Civil War Tale of Love, Loss, and Music

Before the first shots of the Civil War are fired, Junius Hart's life changes forever. He falls in love with Ruby, enslaved on his father's farm, and vows to protect her when he uncovers a plot to steal her away. But their bid for freedom through the Underground Railroad ends in heartbreak when Jayhawkers ambush them, and Ruby is captured.

Junius's only weapon is his music. A gifted fifer since boyhood, he enlists in the Missouri State Guard, hoping the march of armies will lead him back to Ruby. Instead, he is swept into the Confederate Army, trapped between his devotion to Ruby and his growing doubts about the cause he serves.

After the war, Junius channels his grief into a career selling musical instruments, carrying his grandfather's broken fife as a reminder of all he lost. In Canada, fate offers him a glimpse of Ruby's destiny-and the possibility of rekindled love. But a devastating revelation destroys his fragile hope, leaving Junius to carve out a new life.

Years later, when half of that broken fife resurfaces in the hands of a stranger, Junius is confronted with the past he thought he had buried-and offered the redemption he never dared to dream of.

For fans of civil war fiction romance, underground railroad history, and tragic love stories, this powerful novel explores how music, morality, and resilience shape one man's journey through America's darkest chapter.
