The Cloisters - Hardcover

by James J. Rorimer (Author)

"The Cloisters" provides an insightful exploration of the renowned collection and architectural marvels that comprise this unique branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Written by James J. Rorimer, a leading expert in medieval art, the work offers a detailed examination of the art, architecture, and gardens of medieval Europe as they are represented in this iconic New York institution.

The text guides readers through the history and significance of the various cloisters-Romanesque and Gothic structures transported from France and Spain-and the vast array of masterpieces they house, including sculptures, stained glass, and the famous tapestries. By situating these artifacts within their original cultural and religious contexts, Rorimer illuminates the craftsmanship and spiritual devotion of the Middle Ages. This volume serves as an essential resource for understanding the preservation of European heritage and the development of one of the world's most significant collections of medieval treasures. "The Cloisters" remains a vital study for art historians and anyone interested in the enduring legacy of medieval aesthetic and structural traditions.
