The God Children - Hardcover

by Dkdh (Author)

The hum is the first thing to go when you die.

In the mountains, forty-seven people live beyond the reach of The Society-a world where humans have been optimized into perfection, where suffering has been engineered away, where no one ages, no one struggles, and no one truly lives. David leads this hidden community, carrying the weight of their survival the way his father did before him. They are the last holdouts of something The Society calls primitive. They call it human.

When two refugees arrive seeking shelter, David doesn't know they've been sent to destroy everything he protects. Erin is a Society operative, her mission clear: infiltrate, map, transmit. Let the strike force do the rest.

But the mountains change her. The calluses on her hands. A child's rock collection. The smell of old books in a hidden library. A man who asks her to experience the world instead of merely processing it. For the first time in her engineered life, Erin feels something real-and discovers that waking up comes with an impossible choice.

Because The Society is coming. And the only way to stop them might be to become something she was never designed to be: a sacrifice.

The God Children is a meditation on what we lose when we optimize away our imperfections-and what one woman is willing to give so that others might keep the chance to struggle, to fail, and to be beautifully, painfully human.
