Three women, bound by fate and circumstance, all trying to survive in a man's world. They are the women of the Jucari, and they are at their breaking points. Each will rise up, determined to reshape the face of power and end the Blood War which has been raging for years. Each will make her stand for freedom, for respect, for ultimate, bloody power.

Cia, the captive handmaiden, given as a war prize to an abusive mageri-her rebellion sets a spark to the tinderbox of Drucari society.

Ulan, the grieving mother doing all she can to keep a thread of contact with her daughter's spirit while working behind the scenes with her cousin, the Crown's spymaster.

And Bloody Bess, the disregarded Princess Regent, using her dark powers and stolen life force to power her machinations and designs on ultimate power. If she can overthrow her regent through the forbidden blood magics that create the Shadow Girls living in her head, it may be more than her mind that fractures. It may be the world itself.
