The shine of sorrowful youth - Hardcover

by Asaf Amit (Author)

The Shine of Sorrowful Youth is a mesmerizing tale that delves into the depths of the human heart, ultimately revealing the lingering power of lost boyhood and the profound impact of past traumas on our present lives.

On the cusp of fatherhood, Gur is drawn back into the ghosts of his past-a time of aching loss, first love, and the fragile search for solace. In the wake of a tragic car accident that claimed his father's life and left his mother consumed by grief, a young Gur clung to Yaara, the girl who became his refuge in a world forever changed. Now, as he prepares to welcome his own child, long-buried memories rise to the surface, forcing him to reckon with the wounds of his youth and the echoes of a love that never truly faded.

Asaf Amit's The Shine of Sorrowful Youth navigates the complex emotions of Gur, a character burdened by his past yet longing to reconnect with it. Gur's journey, marked by the loss of his father and a significant childhood injury, delves deeply into the psychological impact of such traumas. Amit skillfully interweaves Gur's memories from his Israeli youth with his current life challenges, including the tension between his quest to find his childhood sweetheart, Yaara, and his obligations to his pregnant wife.

Amit's writing style is notably warm and poetic, creating a striking contrast to the novel's more somber themes. The narrative is rich in descriptive passages that paint vivid pictures of memories and settings. Amit's detailed descriptions offer a rich, immersive experience for the reader.

"Subtlety is the most prominent characteristic of Asaf Amit's poetics. The ability to sketch complex events, longings and memories that never let go, in a thin and beautiful line that gives the reader a pulsating reading experience."

-Ron Dahan, Writer and Poet

"A poignant and beautiful tale about recovery from a childhood accident. The Shine of Sorrowful Youth is a poignant and very sensitive read that explores a young man's journey back to the past. When facing upcoming fatherhood, Gur goes back in time to the memory of recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident. The accident cost him his father, and he feared that he would lose his mother to grief. The novel shares the fears of a sensitive and very aware boy who is also awakening to sensuality. During the horrible losses, his first love, Yaara, appeared to be a light in the darkness.

This is the journey of a wounded boy and self-conscious man who would become a carer and supporter of his wife, and a man who recognized the complexity of what it means to be human and the courage it takes to be there for somebody else. This is a very beautiful book that draws deeply on the struggle and courage it takes to recover from physical and emotional trauma, and the magic that helps us through difficult times."

During his journey toward healing, Gur reveals how much support it takes to recover and how hard it can be to let go of our fantasies. Ultimately, he takes a hero's journey-a journey he doesn't want, but one that will help him support his weeping wife.

This is a sad book filled with longing, and Gur doesn't always present himself as a hero. He does present himself as a human being, among other human beings who struggle with life. Deeply moving, this is a book that shows that holding onto wonder often helps us to survive, and that sometimes we have to give up this wonder to return to the world as it has become.
