They Left; I Lived - Hardcover

by Lou Dos Santos (Author)

At the fragile age of twelve, Gabriel Duarte Almeida a quiet, withdrawn boy grappling with undiagnosed learning difficulties was abandoned by his parents and left at a remote boarding school deep in the South African countryside. What should have marked the beginning of a lonely, forgotten childhood turned into something entirely unexpected.

There, among the ivy-clad walls and wind-swept playing fields, Gabriel found the family he never had. Schoolmates, matrons, and a few kind-hearted teachers took him under their wings, protecting him from cruelty, helping him navigate the rocky path of education, and gently rebuilding his fractured sense of worth.

His fellow boarders a fierce, loyal band of brothers became his shield against the relentless bullying, and under their watchful eyes, a surprising talent for numbers and a keen instinct for opportunity emerged. By the time most boys were swapping marbles, Gabriel was quietly building a small, sophisticated money-lending operation the earliest glimpse of a banking empire that would one day bear his signature.

Upon graduating, Gabriel's life took a darker turn: he was conscripted into the South African army, hurled into the chaos of a brutal war. Captured behind enemy lines, his disappearance sparked international concern, eventually reaching the corridors of the United Nations, where humanitarian diplomat Sérgio Vieira de Mello was quietly tasked with mediating his release. Unbeknownst to Gabriel, Sérgio's unseen hand would continue to guide and influence his life long after the war had ended.

Back on home soil, Gabriel poured himself into his professional life at the National Bank. Rising with unrelenting focus and strategic brilliance, he became a formidable figure in finance, revered for his photographic memory, sharp integrity, and steely resilience. Yet beneath the polished exterior, he never forgot those early years the makeshift family who had saved him. Their loyalty remained his true north, shaping every choice, every success.

Years later, Gabriel stood at the pinnacle of his career: Head of the National Bank's prestigious London headquarters. There, amid the polished floors of London's elite circles, he found love with Jessie Parker, a celebrated tennis champion. They married and built a life in a stunning mansion on The Boltons one of the city's most exclusive enclaves their fairy-tale seemingly complete with the birth of their twins, Francis, and Paula, both destined for greatness as law students at Exeter University.

But fate, as it often does, struck with ruthless precision.

One unremarkable afternoon, while Jessie was collecting the twins from university, their car collided head-on with an army truck on manoeuvres from the nearby Porton Down military base. The impact was catastrophic. Jessie, Francis, and Paula were killed instantly.

In a single heartbeat, Gabriel's world so meticulously built, so fiercely protected crumbled into dust.
