Under the Leads - Hardcover

by Giovanni Giacomo Casanova (Author)

Under the Leads is a memoir written by the infamous Italian adventurer and writer, Giacomo Casanova, also known as Jacques. The book chronicles his time spent imprisoned in the Leads, a notorious prison in Venice, Italy, during the 18th century.Casanova was imprisoned for his alleged involvement in a scandalous affair with a Venetian senator's wife. During his time in prison, he kept a detailed journal, documenting his thoughts and experiences. Under the Leads is a collection of these writings, which provide a fascinating insight into the mind of one of history's most notorious figures. The book covers a range of topics, from Casanova's reflections on his past escapades to his musings on religion, philosophy, and literature. He also describes the harsh conditions of his imprisonment, including the cramped cell he shared with another prisoner and the torture he endured at the hands of his captors.Despite the difficult circumstances, Casanova remained resilient and maintained his wit and humor throughout his confinement. Under the Leads is a captivating read that offers a unique perspective on the life of one of history's most intriguing figures. The Leads, used for the confinement of state prisoners, are in fact the lofts of the ducal palace, and take their name from the large plates of lead with which the roof is covered. One can only reach them through the gates of the palace, the prison buildings, or by the bridge of which I have spoken called the Bridge of Sighs. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
